The Future of MTB Trail Maintenance

Dan Frayer
Board President
West Michigan Mountain Bike Association

West Michigan Mountain Bike Alliance’s mission is to improve trails and build community.  Supporting sixteen total trail systems and over 100 miles of natural surface trails, WMMBA is a 100% volunteer run organization.  From Yankee Springs to The Dragon, WMMBA relies on volunteer time, membership dues, proceeds from project specific fundraising and community partnerships to support, maintain and improve trails.  Working with nine total land managers, WMMBA supports some of West Michigan’s most visited outdoor recreational destinations including Luton Park, Merrell Trail, The Underground, Wahlfield Park, Richmond Park, Cannonsburg State Game Area, Hammond Hill, Cannonsburg Ski area and many more.

A great example of WMMBA’s focus on building community and trail improvement was the recent Merrell Trail Improvement Project.  With the support of the West Michigan Coyotes and a dedicated team of volunteers, WMMBA logged over 240 volunteer hours to complete signage updates and trail reroutes to create a fun trail user experience at West Michigan’s most popular trail system.  The collaboration provided great opportunities for the West Michigan Mountain Bike Community to work together, have fun and improve trails.

The Coyotes are a fast, fun, and slightly wild crew of mountain bikers from kindergarten to 12th grade who train and race, some even nationally, but most importantly love to ride. Their mission is to build strong minds, bodies, and character through mountain biking. The group helps young riders develop skills, confidence, and a lifelong passion for the sport in a supportive and stoke-filled environment.

Rooted in West Michigan, the youth-focused cycling group welcomes riders of all levels from first-time shredders to seasoned racers. The Coyotes work to grow the sport, give back to the trails, and make every ride an adventure. Whether they are flowing through berms, hitting jumps, or digging in on trail day, one thing is certain…they always send it.

Kid-focused, parent-approved, and always fueled by good times and snacks, the Coyotes are here to ride, dig, and inspire the next generation of trailblazers. #SendIt

A Special Thanks to project partners Biked Grand Rapids, Plainfield Charter Township, Bearclaw Bicycle Company and the James Musil Memorial Foundation for their support of the Merrell Improvement Project.
